 Macronutrients

  • The nutrients that need to be consumed on daily basis in large quantity . It is usually measured in grams. 
  • They are carbohydrates, proteins and fats. 
  • Carbohydrates are produced by cereals (ie) rice, bajra etc;protein by pulses and legumes (ie) lentils, peas and fats by nuts and oil seds(ie) coconut, cashew etc. 
  • All macronutrients are obtained through the diet as the body can't produce them on its own. Carbohydrates, protein, and fat are the three main suppliers of nutrition in your diet. While all macros provide valuable energy to your body, they each fulfil different functions. 

Protein-energy malnutrition 

  • Protein-energy malnutrition (PEM)— sometimes called protein-calorie malnutrition (PCM)—is the most common nutritional disorder of the developing countries. PEM is widely prevalent in the infants and pre-school children. 
  • Kwashiorkor and marasmus are the two extreme forms of protein-energy malnutrition.
